SL28 is an iconic Kenyan coffee varietal, known for it's bush berry flavor profile (currants, blackberry). Some of Santa Barbara's elite farmers have been planting it in their region, bringing an intriguing balance of terroir and species into focus.

Farmer Profile:

Alex is a third-generation coffee producer. He grew up in Morazán, Yoro, surrounded by coffee cultivation and cattle ranching, and his family produced conventional coffee.

In 1997, the family sold their property in Yoro and moved to El Cielito, Santa Bárbara. There, Alex and his grandfather began planting coffee. In 2002, he and his grandfather emigrated to the United States.

In 2008, Alex returned to Honduras and continued working in coffee production. He spent a couple of years in the country, but he was not satisfied with the results.

In 2012, Alex migrated again to the United States. Three years later, in 2015, he returned to Honduras, where he inherited 0.7 hectares of farmland from his grandfather.

In 2017, Alex purchased a property in El Sauce, Santa Bárbara, and in 2018, he once again returned to the United States. He left an uncle in charge of the farm. In 2025, Alex returned with the intention of settling permanently and dedicating himself fully to coffee production.

Processing:

The cherries are de-pulped every afternoon, then, the parchment is put into fermentation tanks where it is dry fermented for 15 hours. After, the parchment is rinsed into the tank with water four times. Next, its put inside the parabolic solar dryer for around 12-15 days, during the dryer the parchment is sorted by hand to remove defective beans.

Emigration is real in these villages, it's coffee work like this that pays farmers a living wage, allowing for their quality of life to flourish, and future generations to take on coffee farming in their parents footsteps
